[Bookbinder's Tickets for Joseph Fortier] 1) In dark blue ink on white paper, the bookbinder's ticket is in the shape of a closed book, with the spine on the left and text on the font cover. The front cover of the book is a field of blue with text and design elements in white / reversed-out text. A white field with blue text in the lower half of the book cover provides space for a handwritten reorder number. 2) In black ink on pink paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a thin black border surrounding black text. 2. [Bookplate] A lion rampant holding a stemmed (slipped) rose above the entwined letters G or C and H, through which is woven a banner with the Latin phrase. The bookplate is rendered in some kind of red ink, which is raised from the paper both from embossing (visible on the back) and a way that the ink itself is raised from the paper. 3. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 4. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 5. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 6. [Bookplate for Gabrielle Labelle] Black ink on cream paper. The border consists of two black lines on the left and right-hand sides. At the base of each side are black decorative spiraling lines. The top and bottom portion of the border are more elaborate. These borders are thicker with a thin black line on either side and a thick black line in the center. The border is wavy with the lines slanting on either side towards the center of the border. On the top and bottom center of the border is a small half circle decorated with black stripes. In the upper righthand corner of the bookplate is text printed in a stylized serif, capitalized, black font. In the middle of the bookplate is a drawing of a woman sitting at a tall desk reading an open book. The desk is narrow and tall with cupboard at the back. The cupboard is round at the top and the doors are decorated with simple slanted lines. The woman has her hair up and is wearing a dress with puffed sleeves decorated with a simple flower. The skirt of the dress is extremely large and round. The skirt extends out across the entire bottom half of the bookplate. Part of the skirt is decorated with stylized spiral lines and a flower. At the base of the skirt, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in a stylized cursive, black, sentence case font. 7. [Bookplate for Girls’ Reading Room Lending Library] Black ink on orange paper. Border consists of thin black lines with small, round floral decorations. Inside the border, there are several lines of text. The first is in small, bold, black, serif font. The next line is in large, black, capitalized serf font with decorative first letters for reach word. The next line of text has decorative arrows on either side and is printed in small, black, capitalized sans serif font. The next line is in slightly larger black, capitalized, serif font. Underneath is small, italicized thin black serif font with a dotted line for a handwritten number. There is jagged line separating the above font from a short description of the lending terms, printed in black times new roman font. 8. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 9. [Bookplate for William Henderson] Black ink on white paper. Crest features a right hand extending straight out of crest-wreath. The hand clutches a black star fish by one tentacle. The shield is divided per pale with a chief that is also divided in two sections. The top left section is argent and charged with two black elaborate ermine/fleur-de-lis shapes on either side of a black crescent that is almost a full circle. The black crescent has a line in the middle dividing it into two smaller half-moon crescent shapes. The bottom right section is argent and charged with a larger version of the crescent shape. The top right corner is sable and charged with three white five-point stars. The bottom left section has a strip along the left edge of the shield that is argent with sable dots. Next to that is a sable section upon which overlaps three white triangles that extend horizontally from the central dividing line on the shield. Below the shield, there is a curling ribbon with shading on the ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in capitalized, black, serif font. Below the ribbon is the bookplate owner’s name printed in larger, capitalized, black, serif font. 10. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 11. [Bookplate for Arthur Lowndes] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features an oval shape with a thin, pale black border. At the top of the bookplate is a rounded section with a base that goes down a point towards the middle of the bookplate. The image depicts a procession of men entering what appears to be a brick church. The man at the front of the procession is carrying a cross. There is foliage growing on the church exterior. The men are entering an arched doorway and there are windows above and to the right of the doorway. To the right of a procession is a small metal fence with a brick pillar, behind which is a tall, leafy tree. Other trees are silhouetted in black on the far horizon. The base of the image is decorated with leaves and flowers with many petals. Below, the background is a speckled grey wall and there are two crests, one of the left and one on the right. On the left, the crest features a tall leafy tree on a crest-wreath. To the right of the tree is an argent shield charged with three sable fleurs-de-lis, two over one. At the base of the tree trunk, a ribbon billows out to the right with text printed in capitalized, black, sans serif font. The shield is argent with a bend. The bend has a border of two thin sable lines and is charged with three argent leaves. Below the shield, the mottos is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. On the right, the crest features a sable erased dragon’s head floating above a crest-wreath. The shield is all argent with a lozengy field. There is an argent canton in the upper left corner of the shield charged with a smaller version of the sable erased dragon’s head from the crest. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below the crests is a large fireplace. The mantle is covered with books. There is a lamp on the left side of the mantle and a vase filled with plants on the right side of the mantle. Alongside the fireplace, books are stacked on shelves on the left and right-hand side. The mantle itself is decorated with simple vertical black lines. There is a simple iron grate in front of a roaring wood fire. On the left and right hand side of the fireplace itself are square shaped decorative features. There are also fireplace implements on either side of the fireplace. On the floor in front of the fire are a dog and cat. The dog is black and white and is lying down on the left side of the bookplate. The cat is also black and white and is sitting on the right side of the bookplate. Below the cat and dog, the bottom portion of the bookplate features a dense floral decoration. On top of the decoration is a banner with curling ends upon which the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. 12. [Bookplate for R. A. A. Jones] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an armoured arm extending straight out of a crest-wreath. The hand is clutching a spear with points on either end. Droplets are falling from the right spear point. The shield is black with a white chevron. The chevron has a thin white border along its top and bottom edges. The shield is charged with three white double-ended spears, the same style as that in the crest, two over one. The spears have a more elaborate top tip with a line down the middle, with the bottom tip being a simple, undecorated triangle shape. Below the shield, the motto is printed in black, capitalized, serif font. The ribbon has curling ends that split into two with rounds on each end. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, sentence case, black cursive font. 13. [Bookplate for Francis J. Audet] Black ink on white paper. The shield is black at the top with an open book in the center and a fleur-de-lis on either side. The main part of the shield is charged with a lion rampant. Below the lion is a branch with three give-pointed leaves. The motto is printed on a banner below the shield in capitalized, black font. Underneath the motto is cursive black font in various sizes. 14. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. Thin black border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded black font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small black circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a black owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, an eight-point star and the originator's name. Below a waving banner displays the originator's Latin motto. All of the elements cited above are framed by a shield shaped border. Additionally, the paper is cut at skewed angles, causing the image to appear lopsided. 17. [Bookplate for Nanticoke Mechanics' Institute] Bookplate format is text within a solid border. 18. [Bookplate for Dorothy Maclaren Hepton by William Walker Alexander] Brown ink on cream paper. A plain border with a thin brown outline on the outside and thick brown outline on the inside. The image in the center of the bookplate is surrounded by a decorative background. The background has brown dots overlaid with thin white leaves on a stem. The stems curl around the left and right sides of the image. The image in the center is surrounded by a border comprised of three petaled leaves. At the top, bottom, left, and right of the border are two crossed strips covering the leaves. A dark inner border separates the decorative leaves from the center image. The image itself depicts two women sitting in an ancient Grecian scene. There is a building with arches in the left background. Next to the building, right behind the women is a large, shaded column. The foregrounded woman is sitting on a platform. Behind her is a small bowl of flowers. The same flowers decorate her dark hair in a floral crown. She is wearing a flowing white dress with a jewelry band around her right arm, which is holding onto her knees. At her feet is a lyre perched against another ledge. Behind the lyre is a dark, three-legged vessel with smoke pouring from it. There are some bushes behind the vessel and a plain horizon with a dark landscape and a pale sky. To the left of the vessel is a woman either standing or on her knees ; her legs are blocked from view by the sitting woman. The woman is playing a wind instrument, potentially an aulos. Her hair is in a half bun and half down. The ribbons in her hair are also flowing behind her head. Curling ribbons extend from below the image’s bottom border. A thicker ribbon rolls out below the ribbon. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif font. Each word in the owner’s name is printed on its own line, with each line becoming increasingly indented. Two daisy flowers on stems are printed to the left of the last word in the owner’s name. 19.
